The European Union (UN) Commission originally requested that the deadline for the full implementation of recycling of packaging waste be at the end of 2006. However, some members of the EU’s major countries do not consider this deadline to be realistic. Finally, the EU Parliament agreed to relax the December 31, 2008 deadline.
According to the agreement adopted, the minimum total amount of recycled content should reach 60%; the total amount of recycled materials should reach 55%, of which 60% is glass, 60% is paper and paperboard, 50% is metal, 22.5% is plastic, and 15% is wood. Allow Greece, Ireland, and Portugal to relax until 2010 to achieve the above goals.
