2 Introduction to the United States Nutrition Label Education Regulations (NLEA) In the 1980s, the United States only required nutrient content declarations on food packaging: “low fat”, “fat free”, “low sodium”, and “high fiber”. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulated the requirements for nutrition labels, nutrient content of foods, and their impact on health in accordance with the 1990 Nutrition Label Education Regulations, and began implementation in 1994. This regulation requires that the NUTRITION FACTS must appear on the first line of the nutrition label; it should list the nutrient components of the food, such as calories, fat, and cholesterol, and list the amount of nutrition in the food unit. And its share of foods as a percentage of a person’s daily intake of nutrients.
The purpose of listing the percentage of daily intake of nutrients is to enable consumers to build their own healthy diet by calculating nutritional content from different foods. The daily intake value (DV) is based on the amount of 2,000 calories of the diet (in some large packages, usually some 2,000 calories and 2,500 calories of dietary intake indicate some major food nutrition, as shown in Figure 3). 3 Conclusion The author noticed that in the US market on the packaging of food produced in China, an additional nutrient content label was added, in order to comply with the United States' legislation on food nutrition labeling. As people's understanding of the relationship between diet and health increases, food manufacturers want to provide information on the nutritional properties of their foods through labels. As a consumer, it is also desirable to use food nutrients as indicated on the packaging label to effectively select foods to achieve their nutritional and health goals. (Finish)
