Introduction to gravure platemaking DuPont has been working on the development of a photographic polymer laminated film called Riston, which was used on printed circuit boards around the 1970s, and was considered in 1994 This technique is used to make a photo-etched resist film. He suggested laminating the polymer film with a hot metal plate and roller. In the absence of a hot metal plate, the polymer film had to be laminated to a copper etched plate. DuPont's technical literature states that Riston should be rolled by heat and pressure.

Since the initial introduction of Riston, the author of the article independently invented 11 patented technologies, and invented the twelfth patented technology in cooperation with assistants. DuPont combines its products with this technology and uses ImageOn as a registered trademark to invest in the fine printing market. Here is a brief introduction to the 12 techniques of gravure engraving.

How to use ImageOn version
Gravure images can be produced either by 11 separate non-etching techniques or by a special anti-etching method to prevent corrosive agents like FeCl2 from corroding the metal plate.

In the non-etching technique, the line draft or halftone draft is exposed on the ImageOn coated plate, and then it is developed in a 1% sodium carbonate aqueous solution to remove the unexposed ImageOn film. After photo-hardening, protrusions with different heights are formed on the surface of the printing plate, and then it can be printed by gravure printing.

For non-etching technology, the developed ImageOn photopolymerizable emulsion layer on the surface of the printing plate is very strong, and its maximum number of prints can reach 30 prints. Because ImageOn is very stable and predictable, so if the number of prints exceeds 30, you can accurately copy the plate in a few minutes. For larger formats, using ImageOn as an anti-etching plate-making method is a viable option.
Photomaking with ImageOn

ImageOn plate can be used for high-quality halftone photoengraving, gravure engraving, computer-to-plate and simple photocopying. If the photocopy is used as a stencil, rub the vegetable oil into the photocopy paper to make it translucent, and then expose it on the ImageOn printing plate. There are some other methods that use ImageOn to give the platemaker full choice of the type of image and ultimately produce the highest quality gravure plate.

Studio Lighting When Using ImageOn Film The ImageOn film is very sensitive to high-intensity ultraviolet light and must be prevented to ensure that the ImageOn film will not be exposed to ultraviolet light when cutting the film and preparing the plate.

When non-etching technology is used, the light conditions are very flexible. In fact, you can use almost any ambient light without worrying about the exposure of the ImageOn film during the 30-minute preparation process. The most important thing is to prevent ImageOn from being directly exposed to sunlight. If there is a window in your studio that can inject a lot of sunlight, then it is recommended to cover the window with red or yellow plastic translucent grid curtains. A best-of-breed way to block windows is to prepare ImageOn film for printing plates under an incandescent lamp. Then, the prepared printing plate can be covered with a red Reis film or an opaque covering, and transferred to an etching machine for lamination. After the sticky etching pad is placed on the printing plate and the ImageOn film, the Rubylith (red Rees) film should be removed before starting the machine. After lamination, further similar light protection and prevention should be done for the printing plate making process.


Gravure printing plate Because the non-etching nature of the gravure printing plate is almost perfect and stable, the oil-free surface that can accept the ImageOn film can be used to make the printing plate. For all materials or printing plates that can be used, the order of merit is as follows: Roofing copper, flat plated metal sheet, nickel, zinc, copper, laminated wood or wooden block printing plate, aluminum, Plexiglas, Lexan , Stainless steel and mild steel, polyester board, offset or linen varnished cloth.
Plate preparation

Match your image size to your plate size. If you know the image size you want, it is best to cut the plate to the appropriate size before pasting the ImageOn film. The printing plate can be trimmed with the help of ImageOn developed on the printing plate, but the trimmed edges will have burrs compared to the edges of other printing plates. This fact will become more apparent in the final printing.

If the ImageOn film is laminated to a copper or stainless steel plate, the copper and stainless steel plates must be thoroughly cleaned with 320-grit wet glass and dry sandpaper. This process can effectively degrease the printing plate and make the printing plate slightly glistened so that it can be better pasted with the ImageOn film. Once the plate is frosted, there is no need to repeat this process when reusing the plate. However, some platemakers will polish the plate every time ImageOn is applied, because the "degreasing" technology is straightforward and effective. It is sufficient to use Ajax or Comet cleaner and nylon tank cleaner to clean the printing plate.

Before the printing plate is laminated with the ImageOn film, the sanding must be completed. Afterwards, wipe the surface of the plate with a dry, clean cloth to remove the residue of the abrasive. If the dry sanding process cannot be completed in a well-ventilated environment, it is recommended to use the wet sanding method, which can prevent sand and dust from spreading in the air. Make sure not to transfer the fingerprints to the surface of the copper plate.

If you are using electroplated metal or aluminum plates, it is not necessary to polish these plates, but you need to use Comet or Ajax cleaning agents and kitchen cleaning agents for thorough cleaning.

ImagOn will stick to the surface of Plexiglas, Polycarbonate and Polyester plates without sanding, there will be no greasy finger prints on the surface of the plate. A 50% aqueous alcohol solution is sufficient to clean the surface of these plates.
