A new cross-country study identified a novel 3D scanning method. The method is based on the ancient Archimedes displacement principle, immersing objects in water and reconstructing the shape of the 3D object by measuring the volume change of the water. Compared to laser 3D scanning, this flooding method can detect hidden areas and respond to materials that are difficult to scan. The study has been published, entitled "Immersion Conversion to Rebuild 3D Shapes."
This international research team includes researchers from Tel Aviv University, Shandong University, the University of British Columbia and Ben Gurion University. The team will present their work at the annual Computer Graphics Conference SIGGRAPH 2017.
Results of water immersion 3D scanning technology
Immersion scan
Using a robotic arm, the research team dipped the complex 3D shape into a small pool of water. By measuring the gradual change in the volume of water caused by an object being immersed in water more and more, the team can accurately reconstruct the shape of the object.
The researchers explained that in order to obtain the best 3D reconstruction of the subject, they need to immerse the object multiple times in the water, each time immersing at a different angle to form a complete coverage of the shape. The more immersions, the higher the resolution of the reconstruction.
Immersion and corresponding measurement
advantage
Water immersion technology has several advantages over traditional optical scanners. First and foremost, water can reach all areas of the object, including hidden areas. Second, this approach treats all materials equally, and traditional scanning equipment has difficulty scanning glossy or reflective surfaces. Finally, the cost of this approach is relatively low compared to using expensive 3D scanning equipment.
future work
Despite these advantages, the researchers noted that flood immersion scanning can be time consuming due to the need to immerse the object multiple times in water. To solve this problem, the researchers will optimize the method by improving the immersion speed and reducing the number of immersion times.
