Gravure tension control and packaging material production

Reynolds Metal Products' Bellwood Paper Processing Plant, located in Richmond, Va., covers an area of ​​425,000 square feet and is said to be the largest rotary gravure paper product processing plant in the United States. The plant was put into operation in 1957. It currently has 4 cardboard gravure printing machines, 5 light roll gravure printing machines, 4 co-extrusion processing machines, 2 laminating machines, and 28 sets of various types of slitting machines. 6 Taiwan cut paper/crimping machine, 8 gluing machines, 12 metal edging machines and other auxiliary equipment.
The print shop at the Beltwood Plant used four Bobst-Champlain rotary board printers, of which three were equipped with eight printing units and the other with six printing units. The 3 light web presses are Champlain Corsairs gravure presses, each with 8 printing units. There is also a modified Rotomec gravure press (8 printing units) and a Serudy gravure printing machine (8 printing units). The printing cylinder is engraved by Reynolds' Southern Graphics subsidiary.
The Belwood factory still produces food packaging carton for its parent company. The factory is considered to be the pioneer in the printing of water-based inks. All the boxes are printed with water-based ink.
The Belwood Factory also produces colored folding cartons and flexible packaging materials for outside customers for the food service, beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial products and tobacco industries.
Anodized aluminum is a common material for packaging products at Bellwood Paper Products. Typically, anodized aluminum is laminated on regenerated paperboard or bleached sulphate cardboard for use in folding cartonboards and is sometimes pressed onto top of commonly used paper/film (polyethylene, polypropylene) flexible packaging materials. Electrochemical aluminum can sometimes play a dual role of beautifying the package and blocking oxygen and vapor. In the above composite processing of the packaging material, the thinner the better the electrochemical aluminum is due to the cost. In general, the thickness of anodized aluminum is only 0.28 mils (1 mil = 0.001 inch).
Producing large quantities of high-grade packaging materials must always take strict restrictions on production waste. In most cases, the production waste rate associated with register misalignment or substrate wrinkling can be greatly reduced by effectively increasing the tension control accuracy. Reynolds is currently taking steps to standardize tension control for presses, slitters, laminators and coextruders. The complete tension control system is provided by Montalvo. The results obtained have proved that the precision of the tension control fully meets the strict requirements of customers and at the same time can greatly reduce the production waste rate.
According to Mr Larry Long, tension control plays a significant role in non-crimp laminate lamination, high-quality printing, and slitting operations. With the Montalvo tension system, they no longer have to worry about tension control problems.
Prior to the use of Montalvo air-cooled control locks at the Bellwood Paper Products Processing Plant, all equipment only relied on manually controlled water-cooled control gates for normal production operations. "The water-cooled sluice is very troublesome to repair, and its working performance is not reliable. It often rusts. Pipeline plugging, cracking occurs."
Initially only automatic gates were purchased from Montalvo. Later, Reynolds decided to use all Montalvo tension control equipment, which also includes force sensors and controllers. Larry Long particularly appreciated the Montalvo force transducer.
According to Larry Long, Reynolds has established close cooperation with Montalvo. The latter's technical services have always been put in place. Montalvo's products are of good quality, service in place, and professional and technical strength, so Reynolds continues to maintain and develop a good relationship of cooperation with Montalvo.
At the paper processing plant, equipment produced by Montalvo is almost everywhere, such as commonly used load cells, air-cooled brakes on the unwinding unit of the press, and brakes and controls on the slitter. ([USA] Claudia Hein)
