Michelman introduces a new coating that helps eliminate insects

Michelman is a global manufacturer of functionally enhanced coatings for paperboard and corrugated box mills. Recently, the company introduced a new product, BugBanTM 9000, to the outside world.

The BugBanTM 9000 product is a cost-effective, water-based, recyclable new coating for paper and board that reduces the tendency of packaging materials to be damaged by insects. In the use of packaging materials, this special design coating not only resists insects but also eliminates them before they penetrate the packaging material.

Each year, insects lose $212.6 billion in damages to the sugar, cereals, flour, and pet food markets. BugBanTM 9000 products can save money for retailers, distributors, food manufacturers, and consumers by reducing damage caused by insects to packaging materials, and also eliminate the possibility of consumers being exposed to insects in grocery trucks or retail stores.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advocates the use of BugBanTM 9000 on the exterior surfaces of corrugated boxes, folding cartons, wood and corrugated liners used to transport food. In addition, the study also showed that the loading device coated with the BugBanTM 9000 packing case did not leave any noticeable marks on the packing box under wet conditions. Other studies have also shown that active substances added to foods cannot migrate through the paper products that are in contact with the coating.

Testing of BugBanTM 9000 products was conducted in four different regions of the United States. A wide variety of insects were tested in the experiment, including A. humilis, fire ants, German aphids, and Indian aphids.

All studies showed that the paint can remove all insects within 24 hours and remove 70% of the total number of insects within the first 5 hours.

BugBanTM 9000 products can be applied to corrugated cardboard or folding cartons by the following off-line or on-line methods: Coated rods, doctor blades, letterpress printing, gravure printing or size presses. Other applications include wood and corrugated liners. (Guo Caiyun)
