Using Bioengineering to Control Papermaking Black Liquor Technology to Make a Breakthrough in Henan

The Henan Academy of Sciences learned from the advanced papermaking wastewater treatment methods at home and abroad. After three years of efforts, it has made major breakthroughs in utilizing biological engineering to treat black liquor from papermaking wastewater. At present, this result has passed the appraisal of relevant parties.

According to the introduction of relevant scientific research personnel, papermaking wastewater is the hardest to cure in all industrial wastewaters. Black liquor accounts for about 80% of them. Therefore, black liquor treatment marks the level of governance of papermaking wastewater.

In 1997, the Institute of Geography of the Henan Academy of Sciences cooperated with the papermaking plant of Xuchang City to use biological engineering to treat black liquor from papermaking. In 1998, the Science and Technology Committee of Henan Province included this issue as a major science and technology project in the province and invested a large amount of scientific research funds. Through the joint efforts of scientific and technological personnel and enterprises, this subject has made major breakthroughs.

More than 30 experts, scholars, and relevant personnel from more than 20 units across the country, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Paper Association, have recently identified this achievement. The appraisal opinion shows that this achievement has made major breakthroughs in the aspects of microbial acidification technology, cultivation, domestication and application of methane strains.

Researchers observed that the black liquor discharged from the production plant of Xuchang Paper Mill with a high alkali content (PH value of about 12) passed through a one-day cycle effect of a special microorganism known as an acid-producing bacteria, without adding any chemicals. Liquid pH drops to neutral (pH is below 8). After sewage treated with acid-producing bacteria enters the next process, researchers add methanogens to produce methane gas. After measurement, the gas production rate in this process was 0.8%, and the methane content reached 58%.

The use of biological engineering to treat papermaking wastewater has certain economic benefits compared to conventional alkali recovery and pollution control methods. According to scientific calculations made by scientific and technical personnel on the Xuchang Paper Mill, the papermaking plant with a total capacity of 17,000 tons this year used a total of 43.5 million yuan for this pollution control method, which is approximately 9% of the investment for the alkali recovery and pollution control project. Sewage reaches the tertiary emission standard. This bioengineering method can basically keep the cost of papermaking wastewater treatment and alkali recovery method.
